About this Death Cafe
The day dawned, bright and sunny; The date was 2nd April, 2017.The first Death Cafe in Nigeria was scheduled to hold by 4PM at a cozy cafe on Awolowo road in Ikoyi, Lagos.
I felt trepidation, scared, almost. I could barely believe it was finally happening. Death was about to take center stage, would it be frightening? Would it be gross and repelling? Would peole speak in hushed tones? How would it turn out? I had no real idea. Yes, there was the Death Cafe guidelines, yes, I had Tunji Adedokun by my side as co-facilitator, yes, only a few weeks earlier I had had this long Skype call with Jon Underwood and he'd allayed all my fears, he had said it's usually fun but nothing, absolutely nothing could have prepared me for how it turned out.
27 people showed up that day, we sat down on wicker chairs, in a circle under a cabana at that Cafe. We talked about death, passion, purpose, life, funerals, culture, we went the whole nine yards.
The meeting had been scheduled for two hours but one hour turned into two and two hours into three. Connections were formed, the camaraderie was undeniable. Death Cafe turned out to be exciting! Freeing! Fun! Who would have thought?!
On the 7th of April 2019, we will be celebrating two years of Death Cafe in Nigeria and inviting everyone to come for the cupcakes and an open discussion on death.
Cheers to life and making the most of it!
