About this Death Cafe
Death is one of the most important conversations that America is not having. We want to help facilitate healthy death discussions which will hopefully leave our attendees feeling enlightened to live their lives more meaningfully.
About Kriste Kidd & Bunny O'Dell
Kriste Hartman Kidd's curiosity about the taboo topic of death heightened during her caregiving years for her aging grandfather. She was his sole caregiver for ten years until his final breath at 95 years of age. During that time, in an effort to better understand the aging and dying process, she enrolled at Hood College in Frederick. She took numerous gerontology and thanatology courses from pioneers in the hospice and thanatology movement, Dr. Dana Cable & Dr. Terry Martin, and earned her BA in psychology with Psi Chi honors. She currently is working toward her MA Degree in Thanatology (Science of death, grief and bereavement) at Hood College. Kriste is a certified funeral celebrant and works for hospice as a volunteer coordinator.
Bunny Iliff O'Dell, M.A. Thanatology (the study of death, dying, grief, and bereavement) has had an interest in this field of study since attending to her mother, step-father, and mother-in-law as they died. She retired early from Merrill Lynch to return to Hood College and complete her B.A. in Psychology under the tutelage of Drs. Cable and Martin, pioneers in the field of Thanatology. At the same time, she began volunteering as a direct-service volunteer for hospice. After graduation, she began work towards her Master's in Thanatology which she received in 2014. Bunny is the 2014 recipient of the Donna Mowry '98, M.A. '07 Thanatology Award, given annually to a female Thanatology graduate student who makes a significant contribution to the field of Thanatology. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Psi Chi honor societies.
