About this Death Cafe
This Death Cafe event is part of the SAMHAIN Festival 2018 in the city of Limerick from October 25-27. Public talks, family friendly workshops, tours and a night swim are some of the events programmed for the three days celebrating, re-imagining and retelling local Halloween stories through history, folklore and traditions.
Samhain festival will culminate with a light filled lantern parade on Nicholas Street. The Bishop's Lady will rise to once again to roam the medieval streets of Limerick City, haunting all who gather before her.
The procession of lanterns, made by the local communities from biodegradable materials, will be launched onto the River Shannon – as a way of banishing the darkness and remembering the souls of loved ones during the Halloween festivities. The people of Limerick and visitors to the city will gather in a procession of light and dramatically light up the river as the lanterns float away, honouring the spirits of those who have passed.
This bespoke festival will celebrate local folklore and traditions through talks and workshops, and fun educational events for children that will include spooky storytelling, all set within this ancient part of the city. There is an incredible line up of workshops leaders and artists to support the events, including local historian Billy Mag Fhloinn, writer Tracy Fahey, folklorist Michael Fortune and puppeteer Dr. Emma Fisher.
Samhain festival, presented by Lumen Street Theatre, is funded by Limerick City and County Council.
The ethos of Lumen is eco-friendly. Lanterns and puppets are constructed from biodegradable materials.
About Death Cafe Limerick and SAMHAIN Festival
Jennifer Moran Stritch is the director of the Loss and Grief Research Group, a part of the Social Sciences ConneXions research collective at Limerick Institute of Technology. Jennifer lectures in the social sciences at LIT and also facilitates workshops on aspects of death education, grieving, and experiences of loss, resilience and growth across the human lifespan. As one of the founding hosts of Death Café Limerick in 2015, Jennifer has facilitated Death Cafe events across Ireland.
