About this Death Cafe
I have long been a vocal advocate for openly discussing death and dying, but it wasn’t until after my mom’s death in 2016 that I started to really look for ways to expand the conversation. Most people I’ve spoken with have agreed that we in the US generally aren’t great at talking about/facing/experiencing death, and seem eager for an opportunity to change that. It is my deepest hope that through honest and brave conversation (peppered with a good dose of humor), that we can fold death into our lives with love and acceptance, and that that action will allow us live more freely!
SLO County Death Cafe will be held at my partner’s restaurant, Next Door Bistro in Paso Robles. I am very grateful to him for offering his space for this gathering!
About Caitlin Couture
I am a 35 year old organic farmer, mother to a beautiful wild boy, partner to a talented and kind chef, and a passionate advocate for changing the way we talk about death and dying. I have a background in facilitating all sorts of group discussions from farming practices to examining intersecting forms of oppression and privilege to the practice of safe sex and risk reduction. My educational background centered around literature and anthropology which is where I first became interested in looking at death and dying in the US.
