About this Death Cafe

Sara’s professional career spans a trajectory in international health and, more recently, breast cancer research until her retirement from UNC in July 2016.  She was told in high school that she was obsessed with death, which became one of the defining moments in her life. Sara organized and hosted Mebane's first Death Café in July 2014. She serves on the Board of Directors of the National Home Funeral Alliance as well as her local Funeral Consumers Alliance (FCA-Piedmont). Memento Mori!

About Sara Williams

Sara grew tired of waiting for someone to start a local Death Cafe, so just decided to do it herself! She is a trained home funeral guide and a hospice volunteer. She adores the word “psychopomp” and Mexican sugar skulls. Sara’s interest in and acceptance of death has been making people uncomfortable since she announced as a young girl that she loved to hang out in cemeteries. She continues to try and change people’s negative feelings toward death and dying, and is passionate about us reclaiming our sacred tradition of caring for our own dead. Sara is working on establishing her area’s first exclusively green cemetery.
