At this Death Cafe event, our mascot Lola, a life-sized plastic skeleton, sits in on the discussion. She's a reminder of our mortality. Why the name Lola? From the song in the musical Damn Yankees: "Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets." Death is a lot like that.

Gail Rubin, CT, The Doyenne of Death, is author of the award-winning book A Good Goodbye: Funeral Planning for Those Who Don't Plan to Die. She also writes The Family Plot Blog.
