About this Death Cafe
"Death is not separate from life, but a part of it." H.Murakami
This event is hosted as part of Dying Matters Awareness Week 2016.
Death anxiety is on the rise. Humanity is living longer than ever before but what if death could be optional? To what lengths would you go to achieve immortality? What would you pay? Would you allow scientists to access the depths of your mind? Medical advances are now performing the miracle work we only ever dreamt they could. Skincare companies promise consumers their, “...new triple-action formula will reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles...and offer lasting anti-ageing protection!” Worst case scenario; pay a few hundred pounds for a plastic surgeon to periodically pump collagen into your cheeks. No excuses.
You are invited to the first of many Death Cafes this May 10th at the Peckham Pelican, London. Coined in 2010 by Hackney based Jon Underwood, there have been over 3000 Death Cafes hosted globally, highlighting a need to facilitate discussion around that which is ubiquitous within all of us; our mortality.
The Death Cafe is a not for profit franchise that encourages open discussion, often amongst strangers, on death, dying, the ageing process and anything and everything in between. It should in no way be seen as a grievance service but simply a social event providing a platform for the sharing of opinions, experiences, questions and anxieties on death. Every Death Cafe is hosted in a venue providing nourishing food and drinks to fuel yourselves throughout the evening.
This event marks the first of many public occasions forming the development of a wider public programme entitled 'Living In Chronic Time', curated by Samantha Lippett. Following a successful application to The Chisenhale Studios, London, a free week long programme of 'happenings' will take place this July inclusive of live performance, interdisplinary workshops and collaboration, readings, screenings and sound art. Details to follow!
