About this Death Cafe

We have lost proximity to death and death literacy as a result of our death averse culture. So much of the suffering I have witnessed at the end of life grew out of our silence about death. We learned that silence from a culture that drifted far from dying. A Death Cafe is where the silence gives way. Around the table, death is spoken of honestly, and in speaking, we are a little less alone with it. Death Cafes help build that bridge, one conversation at a time. 

I will run the event as outlined in the Death Cafe Guide. However, we will start the Death Cafe with a circle, holding hands for a brief welcome and relaying of guidelines for the Death Cafe.  We will finish the Death Cafe in another circle, thanking participants for attending and sharing.

Hi, I'm Melanie Sheaves — The Death Whisperer. I'm a registered nurse (RN, BSN), Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN), and end-of-life doula. 

I am devoted to walking alongside individuals and families through the profound experience of dying and death. My work is rooted in both professional training and deeply personal experience. 

My approach is not only shaped by my clinical background, but also the rhythms and practices that have grounded me for years; yoga, meditation, and my lifelong connection with horses. I bring a steady heart-centered presence both in skill and soul.

It is an honor and a privilege to serve as your Death Cafe host.
