About this Death Cafe

It is this philosophy that has brought Lanie to the Death Cafe. She believes that death is something we should all feel free to talk about — openly, honestly, and without fear — and that doing so can bring comfort, connection, and even a deeper appreciation for the life we are living. Drawing on everything she has witnessed and experienced, Lanie is here to hold space for those conversations, whatever form they take. She welcomes everyone to the table, wherever they are in their own journey with death and grief.

About Lanie Verboon

Lanie brings 50 years of nursing experience to her role as Death Cafe facilitator, having worked across a remarkable range of settings — from remote and rural locations to busy hospitals, community care, maternal & child health and midwifery. Throughout her career she has sat with people at every stage of life, supporting patients and families through some of their most vulnerable and meaningful moments. Her nursing journey has taken her across diverse communities and environments, giving her a rich understanding of how differently people experience illness, dying, and loss. Whether working in an understaffed clinic far from the nearest city or in the corridors of a major hospital, Lanie has always shown up with skill, steadiness, and deep human care.
