About this Death Cafe
Our format has proven popular. We strive for a homey atmosphere in the church hall. We have a brief social time with wine, cheese, tea, and cakes, then guests gather around round tables set with candles and tablecloths, about 6 guests at each. The facilitator welcomes everyone and a poem is read, or a moment for meditation offered, or a bit of music is played by a musician to center us. The facilitator explains that the Death Cafe is a confidential, welcoming space for people to talk about whatever is on their minds about death. We explain that we do not sell or promote anything, we do not suggest any course of action; none of us are "experts." When the time is almost up, the facilitator suggests that each table select a spokesperson to summarize the topics and ideas that arose in their discussion. We end with a gong and a wish for all to be well and to benefit from the discussion.
