About this Death Cafe
Ballard–Alki Odd Fellows is proud to donate space for the Ballard Death Café. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows’ mission is grounded in mutual aid, compassion, and community care, and aligns closely with the spirit of Death Café.
-
Visiting the Sick: Open conversations about mortality can be a profound act of care. Death Café offers presence and listening for those navigating illness or end-of-life concerns.
-
Relieving the Distressed: Grief, fear, and unspoken worries are heavy burdens. By creating a safe, nonjudgmental space for honest conversation, Death Café helps relieve distress through being heard.
-
Honoring the Dead: While Odd Fellows have traditionally ensured proper burial for members, Death Café honors death by restoring dignity to conversations about dying and breaking the silence around mortality, keeping remembrance alive in community dialogue.
About Lorien Gruchalla and Nora Carria
Welcome to Ballard Death Café. Registration is required - please email deathcafeballard@gmail.com to register.
We gather to create a compassionate, judgment-free space where people can speak openly about death, dying, and life itself. In a culture that often avoids these conversations, sharing them in community can bring connection, insight, and relief.
