About this Death Cafe
This Death Cafe event is an extension of Dr. McCannon's commitment to University of Kansas students and the Lawrence community. The event is for students only, in part, to create a space for enagement at a time when loneliness is becoming more common in American universities. Also, a student only event will help ensure everyone feels welcome and included and not feel like they must defer to faculty, staff, other "adult" members of the community who students might perceive as higher status and thus be les sinclined to participate. Dr. McCannon uses a death cafe-like activity as an inclusive teaching tool in his Sociology of Death and Dying course to engage students of diverse backgrounds in important, and sometimes difficult, conversations. The Kansas Union is graciously covering costs of the venue.
About Kevin McCannon
Dr. Kevin McCanonn is an Associate Teaching Professor of Sociology at the University of Kansas. He regularly teaches a course on death and dying, as well as other health and medicine related courses.
