About this Death Cafe

The Fernwood Death Cafe is hosted by Karen Mittet of islandnarrativetherapy.ca held in the Fernwood Community Association Hall in Victoria, British Columbia.

The Fernwood Death Cafe brings together people who wish to discuss all topics related to death and dying.  It is a brave space to dialogue over tea and sweet treats.

Karen opens the gathering by lighting a candle, honouring the First Nations people with a land acknowledgement,  introduces the facilitators, and recognizes the history of the Death Cafe movement.  She goes over the Death Cafe guidelines to ensure meaningful, thoughtful and respectful conversation.

Karen welcomes one and all to this valuable, thoughtful event :)

About Karen Mittet

Death is a topic that Karen is passionate about since her mother died when she was in her early twenties.  Over the years, Karen has become increasingly aware that people have a strong desire to dialogue with others about death; however, spaces to do so are limited.  A Death Cafe offers a valuable opportunity to open up the conversation about all matters related to death and dying.  Karen is dedicated to hosting and facilitating Death Cafes so that community members have a safe place to share.

Karen Mittet has a Masters in Narrative Therapy and Community Work from the University of Melbourne and is a Narrative Therapy Counsellor.  Her practice is islandnarrativetherapy.ca  Karen holds certifications with the Center for Loss and Life Transition, the Online Creative Grief Studios, the Vancouver School of Narrative Therapy and has been trained by a Dougy Center facilitator.  She has facilitated several bereavement groups over the years for non-profit organizations as well as in her own private practice.  Karen resides in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
