About this Death Cafe

Have you ever wanted to talk about death and dying, with other community members in a safe and supportive space?

Then a Death Cafe might be the right place for you!

Per the Death Cafe website: "Our objective is 'to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives'.

A Death Cafe is a group directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session.

Our Death Cafes are always offered:

- On a not for profit basis

- In an accessible, respectful and confidential space

- With no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action"

Cafes are a great way include death and dying as an addition to healthy conversations.

These gatherings are meant to be casual, informal, and inclusive. These cafes are NOT certified counseling sessions - please note: if you feel that you require psychiatric or medical assistance with your grief, please consider contacting a professional grief counselor.

Light refreshments (coffee, tea, snacks) will be provided. This event is free, but donations that go toward the cost of these refreshments are appreciated :)

In the spirit of Halloween, candy will be available for your snacking pleasure :)

About Ingrid Johansen/924 Gilman Street

The host of the 924 Gilman Death Cafe, Ingrid Johansen, is a licensed funeral director and embalmer in the state of California, and also a veteran Gilman volunteer. The goal of this Death Cafe is to provide an accessible space for community members to openly discuss death related issues. Conversations about death can be especially difficult to talk about in a culture that shuns the topic.

924 Gilman is:
1. A DIY, nonprofit venue for music, art, and community events
2. A cultural landmark since 1986 that continues to inspire similar spaces globally
3. An all-ages, volunteer-run, drug and alcohol-free safe space
4. A multigenerational, independent collective
5. A place for young people to work cooperatively
