About Teresa Blemings
Minutes for January Meeting:
There were several Duke students among the 28 attendees for this Death Café. Most of these students have been participating in a program at Duke that they referred to as “Dignity”. In this program they have talked of their concerns of death or the death of a loved one. The group seemed to feel that this program has made it easier for them to discuss the topic of death. They recently held a death café on campus that was well attended.
There was discussion of “Medical Aid in Dying “or MAID which is available in 10 states in the US. North Carolina is not one of the ten. There is a non-profit, NCDyingRight.org, which is currently advocating for MAID in NC.
Here's an interesting article about using MAID for mental health reasons rather than the traditional US terminally ill standard: https://undark.org/2025/01/15/assisted-death-euthanasia-psychiatric/
The movie “The Room Next Door” starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton was discussed. The film deals with one of the women, Tilda Swinton, facing the prospect of ending her life because of a terminal illness. The movie has a person getting a drug to facilitate the death from the “dark web”. There was discussion about the risk in this approach.
Anne Weston and Sarah Williams are speaking at The Durham Center for Senior Life located at 406 Rigsbee Ave. scheduled for Friday, January 31, 9:30-11am
Good Grief: The Art of Writing a Condolence Letter: and Understanding Body Donation. To register, please call 919-688-8247 ext 110.
One of the main topics for the evening was about building your support team/community and how the Death Café group can help you and potentially be a part of that for you. We also discussed talking to your children/family regarding death.
