About this Death Cafe

Join us at the Gorky for our first ever Death Cafe lead by local artist, Ailene deVries. At this event, we will gather to eat sweets and have a drink while participating in a discussion of death. The objective of a Death Cafe is to increase awareness of death with a view to helping everyone make the most of their (finite) lives.

A Death Cafe is a group directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session. All conversations are open and respectful as well as confidential.

About Ailene deVries

Ailene deVries is an artist based out of Long Beach, California. Through her artwork, she often utilizes themes of death and grief. She has worked and conducted research on death and dying over the years, and is excited to facilitate a Death Cafe.

The Gorky is a gathering space, hosting regular events to bring our community together and co-create beautiful things and moments. We explore themes of conscious consumption, female empowerment and celebration of the human experience.
