About this Death Cafe
This Pop up Death Cafe takes place in Blackfriars Settlement, which has been supporting the local community in Southwark since 1887.
As part of a global movement our Death Cafe is a chance for people in the community to come together, and over a cup of tea and slice of cake, talk freely about death and dying in a safe environment. The session will be informally facilitated and discussion will be in small groups with a chance to move around and meet more people.
Death Café's are not platforms for promotion, and they are not a forum for counselling or bereavement advice. Cafe's are without answers, and don't attempt to provide solutions or conclusions. They are an attempt to overcome our taboos about talking about death in a positive and productive way.
Invariably there is always laughter, sometimes a tear (or two). It's possible there will be discussion about cake too...
This is our fourth Death Cafe, and they are just getting better. It will be different, it's highly likely to be fun. You can come and go as you wish.
About Blackfriars Settlement
Eva Michalek has worked for NHS as an occupational therapist for over 20 years helping people who experience mental health conditions. For the last few years she has been working with people who have dementia and is touching illness, old age, and death on a daily basis. For her exploring the “dark” is just as important as the “light”, as so much growth can come through it… she is very grateful for the unique space that Death Café offers.
Liz Ranger is the Director of Services at Blackfriars Settlement and an enthusiastic supporter of the death cafe concept.
