About this Death Cafe

Sherry Gilles has experienced much death in her personal life over the years and worked for fifteen years on a hospital clinical floor in Indiana. She often took care of the elderly and learned to advocate for those who could not speak for themselves by educating their families, and others, about the importance of discussing end of life options so that the dying person's wishes would be respected. She saw, over many years, how not choosing can lead to futile and painful interventions.

Raymond Anderson is a musicologist and historian who lives in Rantoul, IL.

Sandy Costa and Betty Flatley have graciously worked with the UU Church of Joliet to provide the venue for the Death Cafe and to provide nourishing food, refreshing drinks and cake!

About Sherry Gilles

Sherry Gilles is a retired RN who lives in Crete, IL. She is facilitating her second Death Cafe on this date. The first was held at Pagan Spirit Gathering in June 2013. Sherry assists the Death Cafe Facebook page in finding appropriate content. Raymond T. Anderson will be assisting. He is a retired musician and teacher.

The hosts in charge of arranging the event at the Universal Unitarian Church of Joliet as well as the food and libations are Sandy Costa and Betty Flatley.

They note "Seeking Beauty is sponsoring a “Death Café.” We are all embarking on a journey towards death. Many of us have already helped someone cross over. We are willing to talk about this uncomfortable topic, how to deal with it sanely, to see the beauty and reality therein. “Death Café” is an event. Seeking Beauty is a project, a path, an endeavor. We are sponsoring the café in order to start ourselves and others on the path to Seeking Beauty."
