first death cafe

Hello to you all, how lovely to be able to join such a wonderful group.

We had our first meeting last night for our proposed Death Cafe in Southend on Sea.

We are very blessed to have a beautiful venue, The Temple Cafe which as the name implies is a Buddhist Temple (suitable for quiet space and reflection) with cafe attached (food for the soul).

We thought it would be a good idea to launch this next month to tie in (loosely.. 3rd of November difficult) with the forthcoming Mexican Day of the Dead, and as an introduction perhaps create some 'skull and butterfly' cookies for folk to take away.

There are 6 of us should we start the session with a bit about our background just to break the ice.. and because when you are first meeting new people perhaps a board with pictures and about who we are for future meets. How do you begin your Cafes... Do you begin with storytelling... ?

I know that this is and opportunity for about talking about death, but is it acceptable to also offer other things ... I note that we are not meant to invite guest speakers, and that it shouldnt be too prescriptive.  Several of us are therapists who volunteer at the hospital (reiki/metamorphic/ hand massage)...for cancer patients... is this ok... because sometimes folk don't want to open up in front of other people to start with... but when they feel relaxed they feel more able.. It has been a positive thing for the support group .. we could do it for a donation or is this a definite NO NO.. Just want to get it right from the outset.

Your lovely input would be so appreciated.. and thoughts too.

Your guidance would be really appreciated

Keep it simple

you don't need all those bells and whistles. I would suggest you reread the guidelines. It's hard, if you're used to facilitating, to NOT facilitate, but the beauty of these events and why they are so popular is the "basic" structure. Have you been to another death cafe?
