Please don't...

Please don't...

There are a number of things that we ask people offering Death Cafes not to do. These are in our guide but aren't nearly clear enough it seems. I will address this but in the meantime, here they are....

If you're offering a Death Cafe please don't:

• Start websites, blogs or twitter account with Death Café in the title.

[This is because it is confusing when people google us and get multiple Death Cafe sites.]

• Use the name 'Death Cafe' for things that aren't Death Cafes as set out in our guidance.

[Death Cafe refers to a specific model which is set out in our guide. There are many ways of working with death and this is ours. Death Cafes are always group directed discussions without themes, objectives or guest speakers. Questions are only used if open discussion dries up (which is very rare in my experience). There is a lot of joy to be had in this simple, non directive model. If this isn’t what you’re doing it’s not a Death Café and shouldn’t use this name.]

• Produce Death Cafe merchandise.

[We would like to introduce Death Café merchandise to both support individual Death Cafés and help Death Café develop into a sustainable organization. However this needs to be done carefully because we have a principles of being not for profit and of not leading people to leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action. Merchandise should also be of an appropriate quality and produced in line with our ethical principles. We do need to move quickly in developing a merchandising approach. If you’re interested in helping please let me know :)]

Thanks for not doing these things, it helps keep Death Café as simple as possible.

So, just to clarify, you mention websites, twitter or blogs. My local death cafe (following your model) started a community facebook page called Death Cafe "Town name". Is that allowed?
Thanks.

Sorry, I found the answer. Thanks anyway.

@ Mark

Hi Mark,

The 4 principles are just the same - they are as below and are on our 'about' page http://deathcafe.com/what/. This post is just for extra information.

Jon

Our Death Cafes are always offered:

- On a not for profit basis

- In an accessible, respectful and confidential space

- With no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action

- Alongside refreshing drinks and nourishing food – and cake!

The model as it stands works. I like the community of everyone connected to deathcafe.com

Change in Principles?

I am wondering when the four principles changed. I miss the one about eating cake. Mark with Death Café Atlanta.

Thank you for writing this. :)

I like this too. I always send folks to the main deathcafe.com site for information. There was a group that had put up a local death cafe web site with our county name in the title that was just seemed abandoned. I found out who the webmaster of that site was and called him and asked him to take it down. He was happy to do that. So that feels good! More clarity for folks!
