I have a similar question. We've been offered a venue in a residential hospice. The meeting place is peaceful and homey, with round tables, sitting areas and a fireplace. Does having it in a hospice suggest an endorsement of the agency that would be inconsistent with the death cafe philosophy?

Thanks for the questions. I think it is possible to have successful Death Cafes in both funeral home and hospice settings.

On the plus side these are both venues specifically connected with death. As such holding events there meets our objective of increasing awareness of death.

These are also places that people might not visit so often unless they need to.

However we have a principle of 'not leading people towards any product, conclusion or course of action.' If a specific service was promoted at these events then it would not be appropriate.

If the Death Cafe is held in one of these settings and the venue owner was mentioned and thanked it would be fine. It wouldn't be ok if the venue owner gave any sort of 'pitch' with the intention of getting people to use their services.

Death Cafes in Funeral Homes

I started the Denver Death Cafe last September in a coffee/tea shop and the space was too small and noisy. The next one was at a mortuary and what a difference! It is always quiet, there is plenty of room for 30-40 people and more. I meet with the funeral directors in advance and explain that there is no selling or promotion of any kind allowed. Except for this last one, they have all been respectful of that. I had one person say she wouldn't attend because it is in a funeral home. I have lined up our monthly meetings thru July and they are all at different funeral homes around the Denver area. It is working very well for us!
