Our death café is a living mirror of the conversation. When we met yesterday for our sixth monthly meeting, the group had familiar faces and new ones. As we introduced ourselves and the conversation started there were themes that have come up before and new ideas.

Last night fear seemed to speak to everyone in the room, or rather why fear? Isn’t fear, after all, a choice? Who decided that death had to be negative and scary? Is it possible to not only accept death, but view it as a reward, a possibility?

These opening questions led to an inspired conversation about how fear of death limits ...

New Blog post: Montpelier Death Cafe

This was the fourth gathering at the Montpelier Death Café. While many faces in the room are becoming familiar, some are new. Our reasons for gathering are varied, some come because of the recent loss of a loved one, some because they appreciate an open space to talk about death, and some for reasons they cannot put into words.

After a brief round of introductions from those present, the conversation begins with a question: Is ...

This was our third Montpelier Death Cafe.

We had a wonderful turnout with some of the people who have been at our earlier events as well as some new faces.  We are settling into a monthly schedule and have begun to rotate facilitation.

As things evolve, the conversation seems to deepen with each succesive group.

You can find a wonderful post on FB (see address below) called "Planting Seeds".  And indeed that seems to be what is happening.  The world seems ready and fertile to nourish these beginnings as we stimulate the discussion here and interest spreads.

19 people showed up for our event on a very frigid Vermont evening.   There were a remarkable range of opinions and interests raised that included:  death with dignity; incorporating children into the dying and death ritual process:  suicide; the isolation of grieving; preparing for death and rituals for dying; what comes next/life beyond death.

It seems as if the simple fact of permission to have this conversation in the company of others (many of whom were strangers when we met) was  affirming and seemed like just the beginning or introduction of something that might deepen and grow.
