Death Cafe write up: Providence Death Cafe

Ah! We broke the mold and went for the 20lb carrot cake tonight, which was richly satisfying. Our troupe gathered again small in number as the summer sets in and the conversation turned to the death of identity and various stages of burial, origins of potter's fields, the role of death doulas, vigil work - and - why Rue McClanahan keeps coming back to be sent off again with the fondest wishes and memories on the Internet. This ends our season of death as we pause for the summer break. The Providence Death Cafe will return in October. Until then, stay in touch and keep the conversation going!

A good turnout on our new night, the third Wednesday of each month. Tonight we had our usual cake and fruit, but also were graced with homemade hummus and chips. The conversation ranged far and wide from problems a local Druid has with finding a natural burial ground, to the functional apparatus and methods of determining the point of death. We talked about the patterns that happen with death and how it can effect grief and belief. Small tokens changed hands to add to a certain someone's collection and again - we were paid a very high compliment of being a death cafe in which there was a ...

It was the teensy-weensy Death Cafe today. It was our last day time cafe of the year (we hope to return in the fall and the night one continues on through summer). For some reason known only to the universe, all the adult size chairs were missing from the room. So we sat in the eeensy chairs and had teensy-weensy mini cupcakes with little cups of tea and talked about a kind of death and grief that doesn't get much attention even in a death cafe. The passing of innocence and trust is its grief weight that many know and are often shamed for in life ...

The cupcakes match the new color of the room and we settled down to have a chat about all things death and dying. Gracing us as always our companion from death row with news of his 3 year reprieve, which led into a further discussion of learning to recognize our own reprieves that often happen in less dramatic ways. Much was said of the new found willingness of society to talk about death, and we discussed the peculiar grief that comes with fulfilling an advanced directive and the use of palliative sedation in the last moments. We then talked about the quality of the stars in the skies ...

Ah...last night was something different yet again. The tale of a recent crow funeral witnessed open the evening to much talk about the necessity of connecting to others - not to heal, but too be heard. Personal worries, fears and hopes were shared. Much laughter abounded and the cake was good. One of the main topics of last night was how you try to learn to live with being happy and engaged in life, while waking up every morning to the extreme disappointment of having to struggle on through another dayof chronic pain - both emotional and physical. It was National Semi Colon day, a day that recognizes the ...

My goodness....another Death Cafe tonight and the subject ranged as usual - but we began much differently - instead of laughter yoga or my awful ice breakers - we had a proposal of marriage and acceptance. It set a kind of joyous tone as we explored infant death and the love & grief of parents, ideas about accepting imminent death only to be surprised with a change to imminent life, we await the word from our death row friend as he enters his final appeal and talked about the complications of death penalties, we also talked about the concept of the "death hormone" and whether or not our bodies are programmed ...

in a little red room, still so fresh it smells, with kindergarten chairs just waiting for the afternoon crowd - 6 of us gathered in the middle of the day for the daytime Providence Death Cafe in Fox Point. We were laden with hospice workers, as well as a familiar face - and of course, our guest from death row. The topics ranged about perception of age and death, meaning and awareness - and weather it was a generational awareness - or just one that comes and goes. The stories about chidlren sent off to school to tell strange tales of their homelife - that shocked and appalled as no one knew they ...

A cozy gathering this cafe turned out to be, with bitter cold keeping away all but the hardiest of souls. Two newcomers joined us, one in person and one via arrangements from death row. A candle was produced to transform the cake into a birthday celebration, and a gift of almonds was enjoyed by all. Conversations ranged from the measure of heroics – and the impact such acts have on a body that may regret being saved, to the curious distinction of mobility being a deciding factor for many in quality of life. From death row an inmate shared how although they talk about death all the time, there ...

10 of us gathered on this chill night to talk death and eat some carrot cake. Alack, no Jack - as the timing was off - but nimble were the fingers of his companion to check the 'net to track down links and titles of books as they were mentioned. It was the picture of the angel of death cradling a newborn that brought the talk to the death of the newborn and infant, memento mori and Santa Muerte. From there we talked about the contrasting cremation videos that were going around and the difference between the desire to die in the suicidal, and the desire to die in the ...

Please, a moment of silence out of respect and appreciation for the service the German Chocolate Cake performed at the Providence Death Cafe tonight. It is the only one of us who did not survive. A magical 13 (sorry Jack, you would be fourteen but I can only count those with three or less legs; and for the little one still cuddled in the womb – not yet) gathered and explored the world of Advanced Care Directives, why and how to spell out what you want (DNR or full code) is important to get into the system now, the reality of conversations about wishes in relationships, and how we ...

From corpses of loved ones found in dumpsters to beloved pets in freezers the conversation took several interesting turns tonight as the Laughing Yoga group clucked like chickens in the background. It provided a surreal soundtrack as we found our footing with each other and slowly traveled the path of conversation. The feel of death briefly became a theme as we compared notes on all the bodies we had touched and that led into a discussion of what was feared most and what we looked forward to the most in death too. From there our merry band of 14 traipsed down the path of what our “good death ...

It was a dark and stormy night - the kind where no self respecting Rhode Islander travels ten feet without bread and milk. Seven brave souls braved the elements to come out for the first Providence Death Cafe, including one from the far away land of Worcester, MA. They entered into a brightly lit chamber echoing with the eerie, slightly creepy, and very ironic sounds of the Laughing Yoga group that was just finishing up. They sat down to talk death and eat cake. The cake scored a 10 out of 10 on a scale that only offered 1 through 5. The fruit disappeared like magic. Conversations ranged from ...
