Having attended most of the Death Café events in Calgary since Wendy Kurchak began hosting them, Janine and Jamie have been inspired by the conversations in their community. They imagine an entire city of coffee-drinking-story-telling-people talking comfortably about life and death.

Another Sunday afternoon in Calgary spent at another Death Cafe!
Twenty people came to Rosso Coffee Roasters (which was a feat since we were competing with Comic Con right across the street)!
What a wonderful community, sharing ideas and stories.
Thanks to the terrific staff for all their help. Everyone very much enjoyed the delicious tea, coffee, and treats!

On Sunday, February 5, 14 people braved a snowfall warning to participate in stimulating conversations about death. We had a great mix of regulars and new-comers, which made for a great experience in the dead of winter! Thanks to Caffe Artigiano for great food, delicious drinks and a welcoming atmosphere!

An intimate opportunity for conversations about death and dying—along with coffee and pastries of course—were the order of the day for Calgary’s Death Café held October 16, 2016. Participants persevered through construction detours to make these important conversations happen. Thanks to all the participants and to Caffé Artigiano Westmount for contributing to a great event!

The sign of a great Death Café is one where the participants are so engaged that the noise level is the biggest complaint on the evaluations. This was the experience of the 23 guests at the Death Café held at Good Earth near Westhills in Calgary. Diverse ages, genders, and cultures were present to discuss death, the one thing we all have in common. It was a wonderful turnout for a sunny afternoon in June. Many of the guests were first-time attendees with the promise of return visits. Death Cafés will return in Calgary in October 2016.

There were 21 people at Death Café Calgary sharing conversations about their personal stories and widely varying points of view. The beauty of these cafes is that they provide space for diverse experiences and observations of experiences. If death cannot spark this type of dialogue, what could? Thank you death for your lessons and for your insistence in reaching one another in these deep moments of living. Thank you Calgary community for showing up. And thank you Caffé Artigianno for your beautiful space and delightful service.

Caffé Artigiano (Westmount) was a new and wonderful venue for the last Death Café of 2015 in Calgary. They practically had to throw us out at closing time as no one wanted the conversations to end! Attendees were engaged in sharing stories, ideas, and even the large lattes. Again we had a vast age range with even more guests under the age of 35 than we’ve seen in the past. Of course, the wisdom of the elders in the group is always valued, and the sharing between generations is profound. We look forward to many more conversations in 2016 as the landscape of the death revolution continues ...

The Calgary community participated in another thought-provoking Death Café on Sunday, September 20, 2015 (the day after the wonderful Equinox Vigil in Union Cemetery). Death Café has been thriving in Calgary for the last three years, and this was the first one held in a real café. We completely filled the Second Cup in Marda Loop! The staff offered terrific service ensuring everyone was taken care of and enjoying their delicious tea, coffee, and goodies. Calgary Death Café attendees came from as far away as Red Deer on March 15 and enjoyed the lovely venue: Sunterra Village Marché. Thirty people configured themselves into large groups of 5 or 6 per table. There was a lot of lively conversation and laughter over coffee, tea and a variety of delicious pastries and muffins. Participants arrived by motorcycle, C-train and car, but we're not sure how the goose got there (sorry the goose wouldn’t pose for a photo)! Death Café Calgary on November 16, 2014 was held at yet another venue. The Commons was a beautiful location, but a bit challenging to find. 27 attendees were not dissuaded! Almost half of these brave souls were in attendance for the first time. Another fabulous thing about this café was the diverse demographic with a good mix of men and women and ages spanning from early 30s to late 90s. A gentle reminder that death touches everyone and everyone has a story to share.
The setup of the room allowed for a mix of large, open-group conversations as well as smaller, private discussions. The private booths also permitted ...

Death Cafe Calgary on Sep 21, 2014 was filled to capacity with 33 attendees and their lively conversations! The Kensington Riverside Inn was a wonderful venue for what turned into a beautiful fall Sunday afternoon. The private patio accommodated many of our guests for the second round of conversations making it easier for everyone to hear one another.
Most liked the opportunity to sit with two groups for 45 minutes each, and a few wished there would have been time for a third group. Several had been to previous Death Cafe events in Calgary, but most were first-time guests. The most commonly used words on the evaluations were ...
