About Settle Death Cafe:

Another thought provoking Death Café took place in Friends’ Meeting House, Settle on 12 March. The 10am-12noon Saturday morning drop-in is proving a popular format and future dates are 7 May and 25 June, so consider coming along to find out for yourself what it entails.

Discussion, over home-made cakes and tea/coffee sitting in small groups, is as varied as the individuals dropping by. What has struck me over the three cafés held thus far is how unique each person is in the stories they bring, but that so many echoes connect us to a commonality, a sense of shared experience.

Mostly we talk about our experiences of the death of friends and family, and thoughts about our own death, in an atmosphere of trust and confidentiality. But we do also point to resources that may be of interest, such as helpful books, and we provide a list of organisations which can offer counselling support, since the café itself is not a therapy or support group.

We have had positive feed back about the structure being good and pleased with the initiative of bringing out the difficult subject of death into the open.

A couple of people said that one session gave them what they wanted. Another feed back on hearing about it was that she didn't feel quite ready to attend but it felt good to know it was there.

I am aware that it has cerrtainly brought the subject of Death into the open and many discussions about ...

Settle’s fifth Death Café on 25th June had a very welcoming feel. The four tables were all laden with tablecloths, cakes and little vases of flowers. A total of eleven people came to the café, and most were there from the start. It felt like there were enough people for several discussions to be happening at once, but it was a small enough number to feel like a very relaxed and safe space. We changed to different tables about halfway through. Even though not everybody decided to move, the shift meant that the groups changed subtly, and it was a chance to take stock and think ...
