About Gail Rubin, CT:
Gail Rubin, Certified Thanatologist and The Doyenne of Death®, is author of the award-winning book, A Good Goodbye: Funeral Planning for Those Who Don’t Plan to Die, and KICKING THE BUCKET LIST: 100 Downsizing and Organizing Things to Do Before You Die. Host of A Good Goodbye television series and Internet radio show, she is also a Certified Celebrant and funeral planning consultant. She is a popular speaker who uses humor and films to get the funeral planning conversation started, and a speaker at TEDxABQ 2015. Rubin is a member of the Association for Death Education and Counseling and the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association.

On Friday, May 1, 436 people registered to attend “A Beautiful Death… What Will You Choose?” The Dean’s Health Symposium was held by New Mexico State University’s College of Health and Social Services.
At lunch, Gail Rubin, CT, facilitated the largest Death Cafe held in the world to date. At least 400 people participated.
Dr. Donna Wagner, the interim Dean of NMSU’s College of Health and Social Services, was very pleased with the turn-out and responses to the speakers and the topic of the day – directly confronting the fear and stigma surrounding end-of-life discussions for young and old.

On Saturday, February 2, 18 people came to share their thoughts on mortality to get the most out of this [finite] lifetime at the latest Albuquerque Death Cafe. The eight men and ten women all had their individual reasons for attending the free event at Sheila’s Sweets, and the conversation was fascinating, as always.
Lola the plastic skeleton presided at the head of the table, wearing a cowboy outfit. Remember, “whatever Lola wants, Lola gets.” Death is a lot like that.

At yesterday’s Albuquerque Death Cafe, held at Sheila’s Sweets, seven people joined host Gail Rubin for a wide-ranging conversation. Mascot Lola (pictured), presided at the end of the table.
Topics discussed included this past week’s courtroom consideration of New Mexico’s laws regarding physician aid-in-dying. The judge in the case heard arguments whether it will hold doctors liable under the state’s current rules on physician-assisted suicide. Is providing medication to a patient with a terminal illness relieving suffering or helping someone commit suicide?
As with all discussion of Death Cafe topics, it’s up to the individual to decide.

October 13 at Black Cat Books and Coffee in Truth or Consequences, we had 13 people participate in a back room at the shop.
The conversation focused more on serious healthcare issues, suicide, the nature of life in nursing homes, and options for people with difficult physical conditions, as well as dementia and Alzheimers disease, to seek a painless, peaceful death.
We talked about the importance of having an advocate for a patient, available all the time. That attitude is everything, especially when you get old. How being at one's own home can provide more healing than being in a nursing home. How hospice support and pain ...

The Silver City Death Cafe was held at Javalina Coffee House with four participants in addition to facilitator Gail Rubin with A Good Goodbye. We all fit around one big round table, with plenty of elbow room.
The conversation was generally upbeat. We marveled at the sacred space that surrounds both birth and death, entering and exiting this world. We shared stories of messages of comfort and visions of loved ones who left this physical world old and worn out appearing as young and vital.
