About Cherie Scott:

As a ceremonialist I see death as a sacred rite of passage and thus I enjoy conducting funeral ceremonies.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

I am passionate about creating space for epopel to talk about death and dying. I experienced a lot of deaths in my family and community that were not talked about and whilst studying celebrancy at Monash University in the 90's I was drawn to focus my attention on death and dying. Mentioning to family and friends that I was condcuting funeral ceremonies called forth a flood of stories about deaths and funerals. People just opened up and shared in a way that surprised me and them. It was as if i had "permission to talk about death" indelibly imprinted on my forehead!

What would you like your legacy to be?

That I supported a shift away from the positive / negative polarisation of birth and death - where birth is seen as wonderful and death is seen as horrible. My longing is for death to be embraced as part of life so we can be somewhat prepared for it. That there develops in our community some acceptance, willingness and comfort in speaking openly about death and dying.

Thoughts for sharing:

I belive life is THE most stressful thing we can do - in fact it will even kill you!"
