About Kelli Barr-Lyles:
I am a birth doula and childbirth educator (and trainer for both), a counselor (with one of my specialties being grief), a Gerontologist and a certified Death Midwife.
I have strong passions in both birth and death and a love for all people and the human experience.
My home life revolves around my husband, our three teenage sons and our three feline daughters. :)
What brings you to Death Cafe?
My mother died in 2009. That was when death tapped me on the shoulder and welcomed me to its world. In 2015, my dad died and took me on a whole new journey through grief. I have a strong belief that we need to talk more about death and grief. It will happen to us all and we will all most likely lose people we love along on our path towards death. Ignoring death won't stop it from happening. Death Cafe is an opportunity to simply talk about it. It doesn't have to be good or bad. Simply a conversation about one of the few things all human beings will experience.
What would you like your legacy to be?
That I had an impact on the world. That I enhanced the lives of those I knew. And that I made people smile and laugh. Even when they didn't think they could.
Thoughts for sharing:
Ten years ago, I was afraid of death. I was angry at death. I had no idea how I would survive on this earth without the woman who gave birth to me (even though she and I had a very tumutulous relationship). But death welcomed me in...even though I fought it tooth and nail. And I have had few better lessons in life than the ones death has taught me. Life is not infinite. We must LIVE it. Knowing death is always nearby helps remind me to live my life.
