About Jenn Stone:

I am a happily married wife since 2005 and a dog and cat mama, currently without any furbabies of my own. I'm a Jesus-following, church-going woman of faith. I grew up in Southern California, moved to Wisconsin at age 27, lived in the Madison, WI area for nearly 20 years, before God prompted us to relocate to Arizona in April of 2020. I've been working as a crisis responder for the City of Phoenix since September 2022.

Since God healed me from fibromyalgia in 2018, I have been seeking His will for my life. Following His lead, I have had the honor of being bedside and holding space for three people in the active dying process. First was an elderly friend in Wisconsin dying from ovarian cancer in 2019. After moving to Arizona, I had the privilege of being the full-time caregiver for my grandmother with dementia in the last 13 months of her life, including being present for her last breath on January 7, 2022. And most recently, I was at my stepmom's bedside for 2-1/2 days as her body shutdown after a 3-1/2 year battle with stomach cancer. She left us December 31, 2023. In my crisis response work, I have been called out to many homes in Phoenix to support families after their loved one, often unexpectedly, died in their home.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

I have had a lot of exposure to death and dying in a very short time and have found that none of it rattles me. I find it sad for those left behind, but for those that have been suffering, I fully feel relief for them. I believe this is a gift that not many people have and that I am called to use it.

At my stepmom's hospice bedside, a nurse told me about the existence of death/end-of-life doulas. I asked my Facebook community if they had any experience with a death doula and someone posted the link to a discovery webinar. I signed up for the certification course that night.

While I'm working on my certification, I thought hosting Death Cafés would be a good way for me to learn current thoughts on death from different perspectives. It would also be an outlet for me to talk about my own perspectives and experiences since my family is not comfortable with the topic. I want to learn how people think about death to be of better service to my future clients and their loved ones.

What would you like your legacy to be?

I would love one of my legacies to have been facilitating better dying experiences for patients and their loved ones. I want to provide a holistic approach, supporting them physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I also want to help more people talk about and plan their own end of life experience in the future  in order to more fully enjoy their living experience while healthy.
