Death Cafe profile for Annie Whitlocke

Location: Australia

About Annie Whitlocke:

I am a pastoral carer, meditation instructor at an oncology hospital and funeral celebrant. But I am so much more than those activities. I am a passionate member of a group of people who are dedicated to talking about death, dying at home and green and sustainable funerals.

I have 40 years experience of working within the health and care community. Practice Manager at several medical centres, Personal Carer AQA (quadraplegics Association) Youth Worker and Yoga Teacher (IYTA) for 20 years.

As a carer for my mother and a lifelong student, I know I can never know enough. Which is why the Death Cafe is such a wonderful opportunity for people to just talk, share and question.

I am so honoured to be a small part of community dialogue and intimate sharing.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

The authenticity, the truthfulness and richness of people's experiences are what keep me doing Death Cafes.

If just one person benefits, then it is all worthwhile.

I also enjoy the 'no agenda' aspect, people are free to say whatever they want, knowing they will be heard.

What would you like your legacy to be?

That through my life long search for answers, some may be intrigued also for answers

Thoughts for sharing:

life asked death," WHY DO PEOPLE LOVE ME BUT HATE YOU?"
death responded,"BECAUSE YOU ARE A BEAUTIFUL LIE AND I AM A PAINFUL TRUTH"

On death and dying and the Death Cafe

Words and pictures by Danielle Kutchel

People are talking about death over a cuppa. But it’s not all doom and gloom, writes Danielle Kutchel.

On a sunny afternoon in Fitzroy, up three steep and rickety flights of stairs, an unlikely group of people meet in a whitewashed studio room overlooking busy Gertrude Street.

There are people from all walks of life here; Buddhists, mixing with atheists and sceptics, sharing cakes and cups of tea. Though disparate in background and outlook, they are united by a reality that confronts ultimately all creatures — death. And ...

We had nine people attend this Death Cafe that was held at the Gertrude St Contemporary Art Studio. Four artists attended and a journalist. There was a couple who said they were pushed to come by their daughter, another death cafe facilitator who had time to share their own stories and a designer of garments for the deceased. After climbing three flights of stairs, not easy for one lady who had a new hip transplant and a gentleman who was rehabiltating from a recent stroke. But everyone arrived, albeit a bit puffed. Note to myself, make sure wheeelchair access next time.

It was in the artists studio so ...
