About this Death Cafe

Death Café East County San Diego provides a safe, agenda-free place to discuss death and life. This is not a grief therapy group. It's a friendly and interesting group of people discussing death, dying and end of life concerns. Our motto: “Breathing Life Into Death."

Death Cafés are a part of a global movement to provide a relaxed and nurturing setting where you can join open, honest discussions to explore the questions you may have about life, dying and grief.  Many recognize that our culture is death-denying, and that we can live more fully if we embrace the fact of death.

Enjoy refreshments while engaging in stimulating conversations and meeting new friends.  Oh, and don't be surprised if you laugh a lot.

Anyone is welcome. It’s an event for all ages.

About Karen Van Dyke, Death Café Co-Host

At Death Cafes, people come together in a relaxed and safe setting to discuss life, death, and dying while making the most of our finite lives. Death Cafe is neither a therapy nor a grief group. It is simply a gathering for discussion over tea and cakes. She pioneered the Death Café San Diego as a community service, in May, 2013 joining more than 400 other Cafes worldwide. Death Cafe is built on the premise that many people want to talk about death, but cannot address it with family and/or friends. The safe, secure and confidential atmosphere of Death Café fosters dialogue among individuals who share a desire and curiosity to explore the end-of-life and its many peripheral issues.

 

About Maria Carter - Location Co-Host

Maria Carter attended Death Cafes facilitated by Karen initially to support her friend. What she found was very lively, intriguing, 'edgy' conversations and so many interesting people. Hearing from people from all walks of life and cultures, from Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, atheists, to hospice workers, terminal patients, organ donors, organ recipients, or just those who want to explore, Maria found the environment a very enriching experience. Wanting to share Death Café with others, she introduced this forum to Unity of El Cajon, who quickly embraced it.
