About Maria Carter/Unity of El Cajon:

I am a hopeless romantic (or rather hopeful) … and after watching one of my favorite movies, Serendipity, I was reminded of how much so. One of my favorite parts is the made-up whimsical obituary written by the main character's friend. "I believe in soul mates, serendipity, synchronicities and living a life that is a tapestry of events that culminate in an exquisite, sublime plan." My favorite quote on death also happens to be from this movie. It sticks with me as I contemplate my own life: "The Greeks didn't write obituaries. They only asked one question after a man died: "Did he have passion?"

What brings you to Death Cafe?

Initially, to support my close friend, Karen Van Dyke, who started Death Cafe in San Diego, California. I found the evenings so interesting, that I came back for 4 more!

I did a book study at Unity of El Cajon on "The Untethered Soul." The author, Michael Singer, devoted an entire chapter on 'Contemplating Death,' stating that "You shouldn't be afraid to talk about death ..." And so that was the opening for me to introduce Death Cafe and the response was very favorable.

See KPBS story on our Death Cafe: http://www.kpbs.org/news/2014/nov/26/death-cafe-tea-and-cake-make-death-more-palatable/

What would you like your legacy to be?

To Love, and to help others love more fully.

Thoughts for sharing:

From the movie, Serendipity:
"The Greeks didn't write obituaries. They only asked one question after a man died: "Did he have passion?"
