About Holly Pruett:
Organizing the first PDX Death Café was one of the absolute highlights of my 25+ years as a community organizer and professional facilitator. Now that I’ve crossed into the latter half of my own life and become a Life-Cycle Celebrant providing ceremonial support around the end of life, I’m hungry for connections with others willing to look this topic squarely in the face. That hunger, clearly, is shared. We all need community, especially around loss and mortality. Seeing so many people willing open their hearts and minds to each other and the great mysteries of life and death, is a profoundly moving experience. I am grateful to all who give themselves to it.
What would you like your legacy to be?
Generosity

Death Cafe write up: PDX Death Cafe dinner at the West Cafe

As with our previous four PDX Death Cafes, this was full to overflowing, with 80 participants enjoying a lovely meal provided at no cost by our hosts, the West Cafe.
The first of our Cafes since last December, we were immediately flooded with over 100 registrants when we announced registration. We made the tough call to confirm only those who had not attended a prior Cafe, paired at tables with facilitators who had experience with the Death Cafe format.
The event opened and closed with music from the Loose Strings, a combo formed by a Death Cafe participant, who played a few thematically appropriate tunes.

Death Cafe write up: The 3rd PDX Death Cafe - REGISTRATION CLOSED
Posted by Holly Pruett on Oct. 8, 2013, 7:03 p.m.
In June they braved near 100-hundred degree heat; on September 29th it was torrential rains. Despite the dramatic weather, over 75 brave and curious souls gathered for the 3rd PDX Death Café, hosted by the Adult Education Program of the First Unitarian Church in downtown Portland.
An incredible 72 guests filled out evaluation forms; 73% of them were first-timers. Of those reporting how they had heard about the event, half cited a friend or other personal referral; one-quarter had heard about it through the host church; and one-quarter through the internet, Facebook, or media reports of Death Cafés in other communities.

Death Cafe write up: The 2nd PDX Death Cafe

Despite near 100-hundred degree weather, our 2nd PDX Death Café drew an astonishing 58 folks to the cool environs of Cyril’s at the Clay Pigeon Winery. You can see what participants had to say about the experience in the word cloud posted on our page (the bigger the word, the more frequently mentioned). Interesting, open, stimulating, comforting, honest, thought-provoking, and friendly were the descriptors that led the pack. Nearly everyone completed an evaluation form. All but two people indicated that they would consider attending a future Death Café and would recommend it to friends and family.

If asked to go indoors on a gloriously sunny springtime day to talk about Death, would you expect to describe the experience as fun, exciting, inspirational or enlivening? Those in fact are some of the most common words participants used to describe the first PDX Death Café, held April 28 at the Bijou Café in downtown Portland, Oregon.
The top descriptors volunteered by our 60 participants were: interesting, informative, enlightening, and educational – remarkable given that this event presented absolutely no content. No featured speakers, no presentations, no informational handouts. The format consisted exclusively of sitting with three or four strangers and sharing why they chose to come to ...
