About this Death Cafe

This is an opportunity for people interested in death to have a chance to speak withothers about it. This is not a counseling session, nor a loss & grief group.

About Susan Barber & Christine Kovach, LCSW

Christine Kovach, LCSW, is a local Alameda therapist specializing in grief and loss, and in providing support to those facing serious illness as well as loved ones who are providing care.  Prior to starting this solo practice, she worked for 16 years as a hospice social worker throughout the Bay Area. For several years now she has offered workshops melding art-making and the “therapy” of rituals and story-telling in honor of those who have died.  She holds a fascination and reverence for acknowledging the normalcy of Death as part of Life and the playfulness in which Trickster Death can be depicted in art.

Susan Barber has been a hospice volunteer coordinator since 1997, and prior to that spent 10 years working with people who were dying, facilitating groups for young adults with life threatening illness, attending groups for folks whose loved ones were ill, and spent time working with Stephen & Ondrea Levine.  She is a lover of the 'island paradise' that Alameda is, a lover of windsurfing at 'the Shack',  and paddle boarding around Alameda.  She deeply appreciates most all that her relationship with death has provided over the last almost 30 years.
