About this Death Cafe

This Death Cafe is held in correlation with Made in Mourning: Contemporary Mourning and Reliquary, an exhibition and symposium on contemporary death and mourning culture in America, hosted by The Sculpture Center.

Made in Mourning will navigate contemporary society's methods of reliquary and memorial creation ranging from the mainstream to regional and folk cultures of America. Work to be in the exhibition includes "ghost bikes," video memorials, personal and public reliquaries and artworks that abstractly consider a loss as well as those that were conceived in a direct response to a loss. Although the majority of the works are for remembrance of specific individuals, each piece will offer various points of access for the viewer. Through the skill and thought involved in the artist's creation the full-bodied nature of living beings is re-presented in relics that respond to the diversity of contemporary American culture. A variety of activities for children and adults are planned. To provide an educational and professional overview on contemporary memorial practices, guest lecturers will speak at The Sculpture Center in The Dirt on Death lecture series.

For more information on the exhibition and events, please visit the Sculpture Center website.
