Questions from Lawrence Death Cafe

Lawrence Death Cafe will host the 7th gathering today.  Last month our attendance was close to 20 but this month it's 5.  The article covering Lawrence Death Cafe boosted our attendance for July and this month we are at our all time lowest.  My concern is how to get the word out to the public without paying for ad space in our local newspaper.  We are already on the Death Cafe web site, in an email list going out to 300 to 500 people, on our own Facebook page, on my personal Facebook page and our own Lawrence Death Cafe email list of about 60.  If attendance continues to be this low I am not sure if we will continue to exist. I'm inviting all your ideas on increasing attendance.

I'm so interested in learning more about Death Cafes! These posts are really helpful, though I wish posters would always include a reference to their state. "Lawrence" is a community east of Indianapolis, IN, though I'm thinking the Lawrence posting here is somewhere else...right? Thanks.

ways to advertise

I actually have chosen to not advertise my death cafes very much, as I like small gatherings of no more than 10-12. I do post flyers in the local grocery stores and in Starbucks. I have not contacted the local newspaper, knowing this would probably increase my attendance considerably. I actually think 5 is a good group. Good luck with everything!

thanks to Megan and Lizzy

We are not growing like I thought we would because I thought everyone or at least vast numbers of people would be as interested in death as I am. We'll have about 15 this coming Saturday and that is about the same as usual. Someday I will figure out a way to info Lawrence. I tried emailing all the churches, university departments and other methods. I think fear is a big factor. Thanks for your kind words Lizzy and Megan

Hi Constance,

It's really about the "quality and not about the quantity" when it comes to Death Cafe attendance. As long as you have one person there, you're making a difference. Are your concerns about the costs? We can chat about all of your concerns. I plan on coming to your next one. Please don't get discouraged. In the summer months, people are on vacation, getting their kids back to school and etc. You're doing a great job. Let's chat soon. All the best,

Megan Mooney (meganjomooney@gmail)

Don't forget the folks who are not electronically savvy. Post flyers in common areas.

ways to advertise

yelp
twitter
google +
community newspapers
targeted email to people who are likely to want to come: churches, social work department at university, hospice workers, funeral homes, long term care facilities...
but I agree with Megan, it's quality not quantity
