About Root & Branch Productions:

Formed in 2016, we are a West Yorkshire-based theatre company with a focus on new writing and forgotten gems.

We are passionate about great roles for older women and how families and relationshipos are represented on stage.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

We have received Arts Council England funding for a short tour of our latest play Danny Echo by Cody Daigle-Orians in May 2024.

Danny Echo is a Black Mirror-style exploration of bereavement and the future of AI that uses video and texting alongside live action.

We are working with two Bereavement Charities, representatives of whom will be participating in a post-show Q&A at two of our venues.

We think that facilitating a Death Cafe at our first venue is a safe and supported opportunity for local people to discuss death openly and without expectations.

What would you like your legacy to be?

Death is something that affects everyone and the likelihood of people having to make funerary or end of life plans for a family member is high. The taboo of death can lead bereaved people feeling socially isolated and in need of safe social spaces where they can talk about the person they've lost without fear or embarrassment. We want to create spaces for people to talk about loss and end of life with tears or humour but without shame. We want the legacy to be a more death literate society and hope people leave feeling more confident discussing death, bereavement and end of life.

Thoughts for sharing:

If we know about First Aid we're not pretending to be paramedics and if we talk about death or othersensitive subjects we're not pretending to be grief counsellors but we all need to cultivate a sense of being able to listen and have empathy as part of our community. No elephants in the room, no skeletons in the closet. Let's make a space where it's all allowed.
