About People First Merseyside:

People First Merseyside is a user led organisation for people with learning disabilities. The DAVID project (Dignity and Voices in Dying) was launched with National Lottery funding following the tragic death of one of our members, David. David had no family, had not prepared for his death and had made no end of life plans. This highlighted for our memvers the need for people with learning disabilities to understand and learn about death and bereavement. For too long they had been excluded from the conversation about death and were left unprepared and uninformed about this crucial aspect of their lives.

The DAVID project works to support people with learning disabilities and their families, carers and support networks to find out more about death and bereavement, to explore together in a safe space, sharing ideas, thoughts and memories. Our Death Cafes,  at which we welcome our visitors to join in discussions and activities, are a key aspect of our project.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

As above - the members' experience following the tragic, unexpected death of David, their long term friend and member of People First Merseyside,

The DAVID project was established at the request of members and with their determined input, to enable people with learning disabilities and their carers and support networks to find out more about death and bereavement and to share meories, concerns and ideas on death in a safe and welcoming environment.

What would you like your legacy to be?

The members of the DAVID project  have said that they are determined to remove the stigma surrounding death for people learning disabilities , to challenge the taboos. so that people with learning disabilties are no longer excluded from all the discussions, arrangements and rituals. Our members want to ensure that they and others are empowered to take control of their end of life plans, from will writing, to arranging their funerals, and to receive the support and guidance that will enable them to grieve and to offer support to others.
