About West London Death Cafe:

Clare and Emily started the West London Death Cafe in 2018, hoping to provide a safe place for peole to get together to discuss their thoughts, questions and fear about death.

Why ran quarterly sessions, first at the Playground Theatre on Latimer Road, W10, then at the Bush Theatre, Shepherds Bush.

Since the Covid19 pandemic, we have been holding smaller meetings online.  We hope to return to livemeetings as soon as permitted.

We are grateful to Hammersmith United Charities for funding the rent for the venue.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

Both of us had experience of how the silence and taboo around matters relating to death can add pain and fear to a situation which is inevitably sad.

We believe that a safe forum like a Death Cafe can help by providing a space to explore our fears and questions, allowing us to live life more freely.

We find that many people report that they are pleasantly surprised that it not a sombre or depressing place, there afre evedn some goodlaughs, and it is helpful to share our thoughts with others and realise how much we have in common.

What would you like your legacy to be?

To have defused to fear around death and mortality for just a few peole, maybe even those closest to me!

LIfe is hard enough as it is without adding an unspeakable taboo around mortality.  After all, it's only if we recognise that every day is precious that we can live it to the full.

Thoughts for sharing:

"Talking about death is no more likely to make it happen than talking about sex can make you pregnant"

Although you can figure out what your ideal of a 'good death' would look like, it's only by letting all those around you know that you might get to some of it to go to plan.  So often things take an unexpected turn and you are not able to assert your wishes.  It's a great relief to think things through and record your hopes and preferences .
