About Isabel Knight:

I am a death positivist who has found myself frustrated with the lack of easy-to-access information available to people who are planning funerals or are generally interested in learning more about the funeral industry. I have had a number of friends whose parents have died and they found themselves caught off guard by the cost and complexity of planning their parents' funerals, so I feel strongly that this is an issue that needs to be solved.

I am putting together a DMV area-specific funeral resource center as a side project because I have learned so much in recent years about the industry that doesn't seem readily available in one location, and putting it all in one place was helpful for me, so I am hoping it will be helpful to others.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

I am really excited about the growing momentum of the death positive movement in the DC area. I want to bring more transparency and openness to talking about death and the funeral industry in hopes that it can help both those grieving and just those who may be interested in contemplating their own mortality with the support of a community.

Thoughts for sharing:

In the end, people don’t view their life as merely the average of all its moments—which, after all, is mostly nothing much plus some sleep. For human beings, life is meaningful because it is a story. A story has a sense of a whole, and its arc is determined by the significant moments, the ones where something happens. Measurements of people’s minute-by-minute levels of pleasure and pain miss this fundamental aspect of human existence. A seemingly happy life maybe empty. A seemingly difficult life may be devoted to a great cause. We have purposes larger than ourselves.” - Atul Gawande, Being Mortal
