About Candee Lucas:
I hold an undergraduate degree in sociology from Drake University, a law degree from JFKU School of Law and an M.A. in Pastoral Ministries from Santa Clara University. I trained at Sequoia Hospital, Palo Alto VA and Good Samaritan Hospital and am a hospice vigil volunteer.
I currently serve as a chaplain in two San Francisco Bay area hospitals and aftercare coordinator for the Diocese of San Jose.
What brings you to Death Cafe?
My work with they dying has left me to believe many of us are unprepared for the events that will shape the end of our lives and the lives of our loved ones. The most important part of this is to begin the conversation. Death Cafe is the best way to do this.
What would you like your legacy to be?
She had an open heart, that kept opening until the last . . .
Thoughts for sharing:
I believe all paths lead to God and that all traditions are due respect and honour. I take my sacred inspiration from all of my patients past, present and future; the Dalai Lama, James Tissot, St. John of the Cross, the Buddha, Saint Teresa of Ávila, and, of course, Íñigo who became known as St. Ignatius.
I believe in creating a sacred space for dying; even in the most incongruous of surroundings. The process of death is most akin to the process of birth—albeit one event is generally filled with happiness while the other is stained with sorrow. Both are filled with mystery, awe and wonder. Every new encounter with the dying one is an opportunity for a rendezvous with the divine.
