About Kagyu Samye Dzong London:

Kagyu Samye Dzong London Tibetan Buddhist Centre first opened in April 1998 and offers a peaceful and welcoming environment in our centre in central London.

We run a programme of courses and workshops focusing on meditation, Buddhism, and holistic therapies, in Bermondsey, near the heart of central London. We also provide venues for community activities and alternative practitioners as well as a qualified Tibetan doctor who holds regular clinics where patients receive treatment using traditional Tibetan methods.

We are a branch of Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery in Scotland, which was established in 1967 and is under the direct guidance of Dr Choje Akong Tulku Rinpoche and Choje Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche. As part of the Kagyu Tradition, one of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism, headed by His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa Orgyen Trinley Dorje, the centre looks to offer a constant programme of Buddhist teachings, meditation retreats and meditation instructions, as well as providing a place of calm for Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Lama Gelongma Zangmo is the resident lama and teacher at our London branch.

We have a lovely Tibetan Tea Room with a small reading library attached, and comfortable seating to enjoy a moment of relaxation. We also have a shop offering a wide selection of Buddhist books from all traditions, and a variety of related items, such as incense, meditation cushions, statues and malas.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

The Bardo Group is a group of volunteers connected to Kagyu Samye Dzong London who work under the guidance of Lama Zangmo. We provide practical help and assistance to those  who may be in need during critical illness or during the often difficult period leading up to their eventual passing from this life. We are also able to be present during funeral services to say prayers for the recently deceased.

The help offered by us may be as little as taking the person out to the park for a couple of hours, doing some shopping for them or simply sitting with them for a while to provide company during a stay in hospital or a hospice.

The Bardo Group also provides information to Buddhists, families, carers, medical practitioners and undertakers about how to ensure correct and compassionate treatment of a deceased person's body.

We are also capable of organising and presiding over Buddhist funerals as well as memorial services.

Overall the last two years we have hosted a day called Embracing Death and Dying: a Celebration of Life Through a Reflection on Death. These days were devoted to bringing the often taboo subjects of death and dying out into the open. We had many different speakers discussing various issues related to death and dying. For example a Doctor discussed what actually happens to the body and what can be expeceted at the time of death. There was also discussions revolving around the spiritual care of someone who is dying.

Every time we have hosted this event we also hosted two Death Cafe sessions during the day.

On Saturday the 29th of October we are hosting another Embracing Death and Dying day and during the day we will also host two Death Cafes.
