What brings you to Death Cafe?

I attended Canada's first death cafe in Victoria, BC. The format and the concept is a wonderful way to talk about dying and how we would choose to die.

This fifth in our current series of Death Cafes in the Comox Seniors Centre was held on the afternoon after yet another unusual (for the Comox Valley) snowfall.  Fortunately the temperature had risen enough that the snow was almost clear of walkways and entries by the time participants started to arrive.

Twenty-one people joined us, with a positive mix of new-comers and regulars.  They are invited to seat themselves at one of the tables arranged to seat four, preferably with someone that have not yet met.

The hosts give a brief outline of Death Cafe principles, plus an outline of the format: sharing for the first hour, a ...

This Death Cafe was the sixth in the Comox Valley in 2016; the third one to be held in our new location on the lower floor of the Comox Seniors Centre.  All present found the venue to be quiet and comfortable.  Or at least it was quiet until conversations among the participants seated in groups of four around 4 tables became animated, with occasional shared laughter.

This was on of the largest turnouts to date, and some "regulars" helped us to welcome the many newcomers.  Coffee, tea and cookies were available on a "help yourself" basis, and this worked well.  Topics ranged from discussion of Canada's recently ...

Death Cafes have been held in the Comox Valley for four years now, at several different locations in Courtenay, a small city on Vancouver Island, BC

Our gathering on October 23 was the second one located in our new meeting place in Comox, a town that is also part of the Comox Valley.  D''Esterre House, an attractive multi-level building overlooking the Comox Marina and the Beaufort Mountain, is the home of the Comox Serniors Centre.

At the first session, held in September, we welcomed 9 participants.  After introductions, including some hisory of Death Cafes, a group conversation took place that raised lots of issues, and more than ...
