6 people present so a lovely intimate group for discussions. More or less at the outset two books were mentioned ‘Dying’ by John Hinton and another more recent publication, ‘Coffin Road’ by Peter May. Both very interesting and there do seem to be an increasing number of books out there dealing with various aspects of death, dying and bereavement.

Clare talked of cardboard coffins, caskets and memory boxes and the limited number of manufactured designs available for those wanting to customise or personalise one for their loved one.

Natural burial sites discussed in outline. Belper Cemetery was mentioned as one of the most beautiful sites in the area ...

In a wide ranging discussion a number of issues were explored including:

Advanced arrangements made before someone has died. Works well but some people feel it is actually tempting fate to even discuss such matters.

The role and legal status of a common law wife was discussed Many myths still exist re the rights or otherwise in such a partnership and the legal benefits of marriage

Metal reclamation [from joint replacement and other repairs] and how this works Practice may vary crematorium to crematorium but in future DNA records may become a feature to be considered.

Length of time to make funeral arrangements also discussed Takes longer than ...

 After some introductions the purpose of the group was outlined ie a very informal chat about all issues relating to death, dying and bereavement - with no particular agenda, just the sharing of experience.

 

The group included three guests from Coventry interested in setting up their own Café for patients and relatives at their hospital.

 

Three members of a Derby based community group also came along to discuss their recent experience of bereavement. The most important thing they felt was the need to talk about it. Including the difficulties with practical tasks ie opening jars, hanging a picture and mowing the lawn, the challenges involved in building a new ...

Lovely relaxed atmosphere where everyone felt at ease, we even had a lady join us who didnt know about the Cafe but was in the cafe just before it sarted and decided to stay for a chat.

We even had the local paper turn up and do a write-up, which is wonderful news for Cafe's everywhere.

At the cafe we discussed lots of issues from embalming and how people can help with the final stages of dressing the deceased moving on to talk about open coffins. We touched on care in hospitals and how many people are living to extreme old age.
