About Laurie Dietrich:
I'm a theatre artist, a ritualist and a deathworker. By which I mean that an important focus of my performance and ritual work is the creation of a healthier relationship with the truth of our mortality.
What brings you to Death Cafe?
I think the concept is genius. Death AND cake! I think normalization, humanization and demystification are the strongest allies we have in the fight against fear, and the pain we feel and create in response to that fear. There is nothing more normal, human or prosaic than simply sitting together and talking.
What would you like your legacy to be?
I want to be a part of the movement that is changing the way we treat the dying, in this country and all over the world.
Thoughts for sharing:
To live in fear of death is to live in fear of the one thing that is utterly certain. Imagine the resources for LIVING that can be freed up if we can let go of some of that fear! We will absolutely die. We have that in common with every other person. And yet we live like that's a secret we're keeping from ourselves and from each other. Sharing, not secrecy, is where the comfort lies.
