Death Cafe write up: Tuonen Tupa Death Cafe

Posted by kmarttinen on March 30, 2015, 2:15 p.m.

Saturday the 14th of March we talked about many things. Discussion started slowly about the hatred and guilt we feel towards death and the dead person. Moving on to suicides and euthanasia. All very interesting. But what made me write today, was the information of the death of one special person. Antti O. Arponen was not world famous, but in our little community he was well known. Representative in the city politisc and wrote over 50  sports related books and numerous articles still this year. He wanted to say his word about incurable illness and his upcoming death in the December 13th Tuonen Tupa Death Cafe just a ...

Every time we meet, the comments are about this being the best meeting ever. Wonder how long this lasts? We discussed in small groups first about what we expected of Death Cafe and what we have gotten from it. Then in general discussion we talked about how serious illness or death in family makes friends disappear, they even change to the other side of the street to avoid meeting... probably because they don't know what to say.

Our Death Cafe has many "regulars" but also new people every time. With this group we decided that we will walk head on towards a person who has had a ...

This Saturday afternoon was the most interesing yet. We had invited people representing different religious and ateist ideologies and a few more showed up in addition. There was an orthodox christian and a lutheran priest, representative from Bahai-religion and a freethinker. Among the 50 people were meny combinations of these guests and some that were familiar with more Eastern relgions like buddhism and hindu.

Being from different ideologies, we could have been at each other's throats or in a heated conversation, but everything went really well. Some bold comments were made, but in conclusion all the different ways of thinking pointed out that whatever is beyond death ...

Death Cafe write up: Tuonen Tupa- Death Cafe

We met again in Lappeenranta and had many interested participants to show up. This time conversation was about immident death and fears and also about hard to accept children and infant deaths.

Before the Death Cafe we listened to guitar music played by Konsta Kuronen to music composed by his great uncle Eino Partanen. Music was composed around the time when E.Partanen's 7-year old son succumbed to brain tumor.

Time seemed to be too short again, all the best (=spontaneous) comments started flowing in the doorway. We will meet again next month for sure. And talk about issues we didn't get to talk about today

The supposedly first Death Cafe in Finland - Tuonen Tupa was arranged today in Lappeenranta. Being such a new idea and as media got interested early on, the attendance was about 50 people. Also this first meeting was probably more informative, discussed what this type of activity is about. Much of the conversation started today will continue next month. This many people cannot get conversation flowing and everyone's voice heard. It's expected that the group will be smaller next time and we can continue to talk and drink coffee. After the Death Cafe, young musicians, Minna Mänttäri and Seppo Äikäs, who had composed and ...
