Seven people drank Mexican hot chocolate and ate pan de muerto to celebrate Dia de los Muertos at the Death Cafe on November 1, 2015. We remembered those who have died with special reverence, and wondered how the Aztecs who originated the idea celebrated this ritual 3000 years ago.

We also spoke of the fears we face in life be it accidents that take our lives quickly or staring down a bear who threatens us, and wondered if those are metaphors for death bearing down on us.

We hoped that the practices that we have done to cultivate lovingkindness, compassion, and equanimity in our lives have prepared us ...

The August 2, 2015 Death Cafe in Winchester, Va was attended by a dozen participants who created an environment of trust, sensitivity, and intelligence.

The dialogue centered around whether or not our culture is becoming desensitized or sensitized by the rampant violents deaths that are happening in our world at this time.  We wonder how the media is affecting us, and whether the global community will be able at some point change the world view of what is acceptable behavior for humankind.  How can we effect a paradigm shift? There was agreement that each person through intentional action and thought becomes a participant and there was consensus to ...

Death Cafe June 7, 2015

A bright and dynamic group of twelve people gathered around the table at Steamy’s Cafe in Winchester, VA on a bright and beautiful day in June.

A story of a dedicated caregiver for many people was told. After tending to her beloved husband for more than 20 years, his death came peacefully, and now she wishes to be alone for awhile, to be quiet before the rituals and family surround her.  A time for grace, introspection, and rest.

The right to determine one’s time for dying is always a topic of interest and dialogue. The right to choose to die before ...

It was another beautiful day in the Shenandoah Valley where nine people gathered at Steamy's Cafe to talk about life and death.

One participant reported on the Art of Dying conference held in NYC recently where more than a dozen fine minds gathered to talk about the art of dying.

Robert Thurman spoke of "the clear light of the void", he asks that we be conscious of our unconscious and that everything we do matters. Eben Alexander told us about his near death experience, and others spoke to the future of end of life care.  The dialogue on living, dying, and death is rich, deep, and very ...

Sitting around a large table under two skylights with sunshine streaming, eight bright and inquisitive people gathered on Easter Sunday to talk about life and death.

"Maybe we don't have to die if we would just learn to take care of each other and love."  This comment met with zero resistance and the notion quite intrigued us with possibility.

Viewing death as an organic, natural  experience creates a liberation from fear of it.

Meeting our own death and the death of others not from a detached, conditioned cultural perspective, but from the authentic self facilitates acceptance and ease.

As part of doctoral studies in Occupational Therapy  a ...

On January 4, 2015 seven people met at Steamy's for a very interesting and intimate meeting discussing death, dying, restored memory, and active dreams.  There was one new person to the group, a younger woman, who provided a fresh wisdom and insight into perceptions of death and the profound awareness of its presence as part of life.

A real dream of equanimity during a violent death provided a stunning awareness of how our lives provide us opportunity for presence at the time of death.

All participants express value for their time together and appreciation of the venue and one another.

We will continue to meet on the ...

Death Cafe

Berryville, Virginia

September 7, 2014

It was a beautiful fall day in Berryville, Virginia where nearly twenty people came together for the first Death Cafe. The discussion moved from the practical issues in dealing with death like advanced medical directives and the dnr order to amazing stories of experiences in families related to death and dying.

The intention and conscious choice to cease all nourishment to facilitate death, or the amazing resolve to walk into the woods to die show the deep and abiding awareness there is to dying and courageous action to facilitate and be with death on one’s own terms.  There was realization ...
