About Suzanne Michal:

I am really excited about running a Death Cafe so that many other people can benefit from this amazing opportunity to talk about death. I really believe from experience that the best way to free ourselves from a fear of dying or the pain of having lost a loved one is to talk about it, in a natural way and listen to other's stories too.

I have been involved with death for 24 years, it has shaped who I am and my work as an Energy Healer.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

The desire to share with others our stories, our beliefs, our fears, our pains, our joys, our journeys around death. This in itself brings a growth in understanding, an emotional evolution.

The desire to meet other people who are interested in the subject.

What would you like your legacy to be?

Peace, fun and love !

Thoughts for sharing:

So for some reason that was one of the best death cafe I have ever attended. We had nearly equal men and women and we were read three wonderful tales of death by 3 men! An absolute treat.

We all shared our own stories, some pretty moving and humbling... of forgiveness long after one's mother's passing, of losing 18 loved ones in just over one year, of keeping in touch with the children of one's best friend who passed away and left a big hole in a man's life...

We were 9 around that long table, all taken in by each other's sharing ...

We were only four around one table with one candle! By the time our introduction were completed we were already engaged in heart to heart exchanges. We were lucky to have a palliative doctore who shared many beatufiul tales of last days to patients in the hospice where she works. I was touched by the young couple who finished our quatuor dedicated to promote healthy attitudes to death and dying.

Another special death cafe evening!

I cannot quite explain what made this death cafe, even more moving and warming than the others but it was. Maybe sitting close to one another as we were quite a good grouop around two tables, each with our own discussion going on.

It is always moving to hear people's stories but this time we also had the chance of being inspired by a retired GP who urged us to keep the body of someone who has just died within the home, with the family for at least 24 hours if at all possible like traditional cultures in order to help with the bereavement process, the family ...

It was very different experience this time for me. Even after two years of running death cafes.

We were deeply moved by two ladies who work for a children's hospice.

A lady shared about working in refugee camps and how they delivered back to familie the ashes of those who had died in the camp. Very emotional and a sharing about different cultural responses to death and bereavement.

As a man left, he told me "how balanced and serene" he now felt...

A powerful melting pot of such unique stories, personalities, point of views, needs...

17 people turned up to what became a lively, sometimes fun (I was sitting next to a man with a great dark sense of humour) and profound exploration around many facets of death and dying.

It took only the first round of introduction, in small groups to hit deep angles such as when the will to die overcomes someone facing traumatic pain after an operation, clearing war sites in Afganistan of dead bodies, is it normal not to have any fear of death, why do we hold onto people who are ready to die of old age, what makes a funeral meaningful, writing to someone on death row ...

The discussion this month naturally evolved around the weight of treating death as a taboo. Why do we do it and the many different costs for such a cultural attitude.

We wondered if it could be a legacy from the mediaval plague, how death and bereavement make us face our human limitations and emotional limitations...

Some were open in sharing about spiritual and near death experiences whilst others retained a more sceptical and down to eath attitude to death. All those shared views and experiences cohabited perfectly and easily in the most nourishing manner.

As always, despite meeting total strangers, it feels like meeting old friends with whom ...

We were eight gathered around a very long table. And it very quickly got pretty deeply emotional and profound. The first strong emotion that came up for me was privileged. That is it: I felt privileged for being giving the opportunity to hear stories that people don't normally share. Really poignat and honest stuff. It is so refreshing, so moving and beautiful. Our common humanity definitely shines in those moments.

Bruce shared: "My first Death Cafe turned out to be a wonderfully surprising experience. It was great to be able  to share my thoughts and feelings in a safe, respectful gathering. This topic can be so raw ...

Despite the fact that only about half the people I was expecting came, it was an almighty powerful evening.

Listening to a woman share her story of her mother's passing in March moved me to tears and inspired so much hope in healing relationships, even difficult ones before someone goes for good.

Yet again, the same effect happened which is a classic for a Death Cafe: people's masks and pretence fall aside and a genuine human being starts to shine.

To our surprise in the middle of it, 2 ladies appeared. They were Norwegian and came to London only for the day to meet Jon who ...

We had around 20 people attending this wonderful first Death Cafe in Putney. Discussion ranged from why we are interested in talking about death to what is our religious background as this is such a strong framework to our relationship with death. This was followed by a very lively break where some mingled whilst some carried on involved discussions and connections.

We finished with looking at our fears around death. The last comment of the evening being that it would be great to hold the Death Cafe whilst eating some "Death by chocolate" cake. So, yet again humour was present!
