About Val Lovelace:

I am a holistic practitioner who specialises in working with the dying and their families.  I hold a master's degree in Human Relations and have been an adult educator for many years.

I am the Executive Director of It's My Death, a 501(c)(3) public charity founded for the purpose of providing holistic end-of-life services and community education.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

Death Cafe is a wonderful way to encourage people to overcome their fear and awaken to how short a human life really is.  I feel it is important to ponder death because I believe that becoming intimate with mortality can help us live more consciously and purpposefully.

What would you like your legacy to be?

That I lived gently on this earth and did my best with life's offerings.

Thoughts for sharing:

“In the end, only three things matter.  How much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you.”  ~ Jack Kornfield

The thing i love the most about Death Cafe is that I never know what will come up and I find myself fascinated and delighted as topics arise.

Tonight we enjoyed fresh-baked oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies, coffee, tea, and discussions about old photographs, family keepsakes, estate planning, and learning how to keep living and reinventing oneself all the while aging.

A regular Death Cafe visitor talked about how she and her husband have been able to have richer, deeper conversations about their will and estate since attending Death Cafe, and have been talking with their daughter (who is their trustee and executrix).

Someone asked about natural burial ...

It's been raining here for a few days now, and tonight was pretty awful.  Even so, three brave souls ventured out into the wind and rain to talk about death...and life...and breathing...and near death experiences...and suicide...and...

One man spoke of a severe accident he had some years ago and how his father came to tell him he couldn't die yet, that he still had things to do.

Conversation drifted toward other NDE experiences we had heard about and wondering what role our minds and our souls play in things that happen.  We all agreed that if we have guardian angels that ...

We had a wonderful gathering of folks from Westport and surrounding communities, most of whom were new to Death Cafe discussions.  One woman celebrated her 73rd birthday by attending with us, saying her family found it a bit surprising that she would want to join a discussion about death.

The conversations moved freely between experiences people had with their dying loved ones to talking about cemation, funerals, and whether it was up to the dead to have a ceremony or not (some felt like they did not want a memorial service or gathering while others felt that memorials are for the living and not the dead).  One learned ...
