About Hayley West:
Hayley West’s practice relates to a lived awareness of death and memorial, working with sculpture, video, performance and installation. Her research explores the realities of grief through personal experiences and artistic practice, focusing on the inevitability of one’s own death and the impact on those remaining.
As an artist working in the public realm, Hayley believes in empowering the community by sharing practical knowledge through exchange and generosity. Her practice spans over 20 years of research, exhibitions and international residencies.
Hayley hosts DEAD AIR a weekly radio show on 94.9MAINfm, is a member of the Natural Death Advocacy Network, on the board of the Castlemaine Cemetery Trust, and has co-hosted Death Cafés since 2014.
The Departure was once a studio & advocacy space located at The Mill. It is currently existing in a transient form without a fixed location. Please contact Hayley regarding art related commissions such as bespoke ceramic ashes urns. She can also recommend reputable funeral industry businesses and individuals working in end-of-life care, other contemporary artists working in the realm of death and give advice on running a Death Café in your own community.

Death Cafe was well received here in Saint-Louis with those I could explain it to in my broken French! I did find it a little difficult to broach the subject of death with locals as well as find people who could speak good enough English to participate in the Death Cafe.
However on the day we had an enthusiastic contingent of five from Finland, Senegal and Australia all keen to explore death related issues. A particularly interesting discussion revolved around the rituals and beliefs of Muslim burial in Senegal. This latest Death Cafe was co-hosted by myself (Hayley West) and Kerrie Noonan.
I opened procedings talking about my arts practise and research topic as a Masters candidate - 'The Vestigial: remnants of the dead and demands on the living'. My interest area being what to do with objects and memories left behind when loved ones die. I read a passage from 'Objects of the Dead' by Brisbane writer Margaret Gibson, a fabulous book.
With a few artists present it made for interesting creative talk around arts practises and death related inquiries.
We were also introduced to the 'Shroud Momento' project by Helen Dunne who came up from Sydney ...
